Bed & Breakfast – A new trend in India

During the holding of Asian Games and subsequently when some large international events were to be held in Delhi a severe crunch of accommodation to house the visitors to the Indian cities was felt.  To meet this challenge the Govt. of Delhi came up with the scheme to encourage and approve the home stays by the people who had spare accommodation and willingness to provide the same to visitors to mitigate this problem partially.

The scheme entails the provision of up to 5 rooms having attached independent toilets for the use of guests in own house can be registered as a Bed & Breakfast Service provider.  The guests shall be provided the clean and well kept hygienically maintained rooms and food to the guests who opt to use the facility.

This is a very good scheme and besides providing accommodation is also beneficial for foreign tourists as they get to know the culture, pertaining to food, customs, festivities, costumes, and dresses etc also while staying in the homestays.

This system of home stays had been very popular in many countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand etc where tourism is one of the mainstays of the economy.  Homestays is well organized and reservations are handles by various organizations like travel agents, online reservation process, and some other channels to meet the requirement of tourists.  Depending on the level of services and quality of accommodation provided these can be priced which can vary according to season, availability, demand and special services provided.

On the whole, it is a good concept and catching up in India especially in and around metro cities.  However, the smaller cities and other areas are also trying to enter the field and register their presence.
