Townhall on Gyan Swaraj: Building A True Public Library of India
July 30, 2019 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm IST
Abstract: Carl Malamud will discuss his vision of a public library of India, a goal he and many others think is not only possible but necessary. Information in our modern world has been colonized, access to information has become a question of access to money. India’s goal to achieve a $5 trillion economy can only happen if the most important natural resource—the people of India—is tapped and the key to liberating that vast potential is education. Carl will discuss discuss practical aspects of Gyan swaraj now taking place in India, including the digitization of books by a group of volunteers who call themselves the Servants of Knowledge, a massive text and data mining facility for researchers that has opened at JNU and IIT Delhi, and efforts to free up key resources such as Indian standards, the Official Gazettes, and works of the government.
Bio: Carl Malamud has spent 40 years at the forefront of the Internet revolution. He created the first radio station on the Internet, including the first podcasts and early live streaming efforts. He is a leader in the open government movement in the U.S.putting online for the first time key government databases such as the U.S. Patent, Securities and Exchange Commission, and Internal Revenue Services public databases, as well as U.S. court opinions, congressional hearings, and many other resources. He is the author of 9 books and numerous awards, including the Berkman Award from Harvard University for his “outstanding contributions to the Internet’s impact on society.” Carl has been spending more than half his time in India for the last few years and has often been hard to say “scanning is the new spinning.” Jai Gyan. Jai Hind.
