Information and Communication Technology is the study of developing and using technology to process information and assists in communication. It refers to all technologies which are used to handle telecommunication, broadcast media, network based control and monitoring functions. It is the convergence of all types of technologies from using the simple software in a system to transferring data to another system connected to the network. Commonly, ISP (Internet service provider) provides internet and television services to homes and business through a single cable. Besides its wide usability in daily as well as in Engineering ICT has a wide role in all health care professions from nursing any patient to diagnosing a disease. With the advent of ICT, it has been proving itself the best way to do everything you like to do with a variety of emergency in technologies for the past so many years.ICT provides opportunities to all health care providers and medical professionals to obtain information, communicate with all other healthcare professionals, offer health care

Support and promote preventive health care programs. The changing technology has led to a rethinking of the way the technology can be used for healthcare delivery. All healthcare programs like nursing, allied health sciences, pharmacy use ICT very effectively.

One of the most important applications of ICT in healthcare professions is in the radiology. Radiology is the medical specialty that uses imaging to diagnose a disease. It uses modalities like ultrasound, x-rays, magnetic resource imaging, subatomic particles Nuclear medicine and positron emission Tomography. For implementing these types of modalities typically client, through which a request is made and server, which is responsible for a response. Besides this, a network of 1 GB faster Ethernet hardware and software, typically Dicom is the underlying protocol is required.

  • Picture archiving and communication system (PACS) provides economical storage of and convenient access to images from multiple modalities.
  • Radiology information system (RIS) is a computerized database which is used to store, manipulate and distribute patient radiological data and imagery. Not only storage and distribution of patient’s data but transmission of radiological images from one network to another so that to take the prescription of other professionals or for the purpose of sharing the study with other radiologists.
  • Voice recognition system is also one of the most important ICT’s applications to radiology. Transmission of spoken words into text computer-aided Diagnosis pattern –recognition soft wares highlight suspicious area on images and draws the attention of the radiologist to suspicious areas useful in assisting decision for appropriate imaging.

In this way, radiology uses ICT up to the best of the mark. Not only the radiology but ophthalmology also uses information technology in the processing. Ophthalmology is the field of medicine that is related to the images of the eye. IT in ophthalmology is the technology (Hardware and Software) required for the processing of data and other information which is important for the patient and essential for the building of electronic health record. Electronic health record (EHR) is a longitudinal electronic record of patient health information generated by one or more encounters in any care delivery setting.

ICT has a wider use of Medical Laboratory and Neurophysiology technology also. Medical Laboratories around the world use computer technology to test thousands of different compounds for running the simulations, taking blood samples and analyzing the results are an important part of work there as well. Computer technology can also quickly determine whether the levels of protein amino acids are within the normal range or not.

Neurophysiology technology is technology where the technology relates to patients brain and the technologist is able to record every activity from the brain and whatever is the activity, displays that to the screen.

Apart from the Allied health professions, in today’s era, Nurses have an excellent opportunity to contribute to innovation by using them to develop services for patients. Using technologies, nurses have the potential to reshape how they work, to provide care tailored to the needs of the increasing number of patients with long-term conditions. Using a range of ICT will lead to both better quality and increased personalization of patient care.

Besides this pharmaceutical industry uses information technology in a very efficient way. The automation of all the manual work is based on IT systems. There are many different automated soft wares that aid the smooth functioning of pharmaceutical units and improved efficiency, accuracy and decision making.
