Prevention is Better than Cure…the Ayurveda Way!!

Every individual desires a long and healthy life but in today’s era of the polluted world, exhausting lifestyle and rapid urbanization it’s becoming more difficult to complete this task. Medical science has evolved thousandfold but the prime focus was on the cure of diseases rather on the prevention of health. Ayurveda is the oldest medical science in the history of mankind. It is the need of time to look back and follow the secrets of our ancestors who were living a healthy life for hundreds of years with the help of Ayurveda.

According to Ayurveda, the human body gets nourished on external factors that include food, water, atmosphere, and even psychological feeds that we receive. Homeostasis always exists between body needs and nourishment received which is maintained by the mechanisms which function at various levels. Ayurveda has discovered five procedures named Vamana, Virechana, Niruha Basti, Anuvasana Basti, and Nasya which are useful to maintain this homeostasis. The body’s functions are in accordance with a circadian rhythm which is due to changes in atmosphere and adaptation that take place at a physiological level. Ayurveda has classified functional entities in the body in three broad categories termed Dosha viz. Vata, Pitta, Kapha. The balance of these three keeps a person disease-free. Seasonal variations are observed in these factors. For e.g. In Vasanta Ritu i.e. in the month of February-March Kapha increases naturally which makes a person prone to diseases like Asthma, allergies, certain skin disorders, etc. In the starting off rainy season Vata increases in the body; the abnormal rise of which is responsible for the aggravation of degenerative joint disorders, certain neurological diseases. Similarly, Pitta vitiation in Sharada Ritu i.e. near September-October aggravates digestive disorders, skin diseases, etc. Timely management of these vitiations of Dosha can keep a person healthy and live long. Ayurveda advocates to Take Vamana in Vasant Ritu (in February-March), Virechana in Sharad Ritu (in September-October), Niruha and Anuvasana Basti at the beginning of Varsha Ritu (in June- July) to maintain the health. However, Nasyakarma is included in a daily regimen to be followed. The mode of action of these therapies and their role in the prevention of health and cure of diseases has already been validated through many clinical and experimental types of research. Duration required for these therapies ranges from 7 to 15 days and needs minimal hospitalization. However, care must be taken to follow the do and don’ts associated with these treatments. Healthy individual reports improvement in overall quality of life after undergoing these therapies which is very much needed for longevity with health.
