Responding to emergency cases without panicking is a crucial part of medical & nursing students’ training. Keeping this in mind, SGT University has established National Reference Simulation Centre (NRSC) in 2018 to provide comprehensive training to nursing & medical professionals and other healthcare professionals. Spread across 14,000 square feet area in the lush green campus of SGTU, the centre was established in collaboration with Indian Nursing Council, JHPIEGO, and Laerdal Medical. The prime objective of this lab is to make healthcare safer for patients by providing quality care through simulation-based education.
Equipped with specialized simulation labs and advanced technologies, the centre is designed to provide students a chance to practice medical and surgical skills on task trainers & stimulators ranging from low-medium-high fidelity manikins using superior recording equipment in a variety of settings. It will also act as a platform where students can practice and repeat procedures as often as necessary to correct their mistakes, fine-tune their skills, and optimize clinical outcomes. They will be trained by professionals who have a lot of knowledge under their belts so that they can develop & refine their knowledge, skills, and attitude without compromising the safety of real patients. It will also help the students to enhance their problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Shedding some light on simulation lab importance Anu Malik, Officiating Director, National Reference Simulation Centre (NRSC), said, “Simulation-Based education is a new and advanced teaching-learning method that allows us to amplify the impact of these training while minimizing the risks to the real patients in hospitals.” She also revealed the main aim to set up this lab was to create an opportunity for students to manage an emergency case on their own without getting nervous or panicking by ensuring psychological safe learning environment. Furthermore, the centre has a birthing simulator, intensive care unit, trauma & emergency room, maternal & child care lab, infection prevention room, adult patient simulator, infant and child mannequins, pediatric ICU, neonatal simulator, and operation theatre modules to provide real-time experience to students.
Located on the 4th floor of the building, the NRSC simulates a hospital setting that is fully equipped to practice all clinical skills. The centre has one high fidelity Sim-Mom manikin, two high fidelity Crash Kelly manikins, ten medium-fidelity SimBaby manikins, and one high fidelity Nursing Anne manikin. Besides this, the centre has a Nursing Anne manikin on which students practised how to measure IV, blood pressure, etc., and several task trainers. The NRSC is also equipped with 11 computers and 32 cameras.
The National Reference Simulation Centre (NRSC) is an International Training Centre (ITC) for American Heart Association that conducts regular workshops on Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). Besides this, the team of NRSC are master trainers for Simulation-Based education and Skill Standardization and Simulation training for midwifery faculty who will further cascade this training methodology to other nursing institutions all across the country.
