Student Interview: Exploring Mass Communication with Jagriti

Student Interview: Jagriti Uppal was a student of BJMC at SGT University. Jagriti shared her experience about SGT University facilities.

1. Hi, thanks for being part of this student interview. Kindly, introduce yourself. What are your interests and hobbies?

Hey, my name is Jagriti Uppal, I’m from Dehradun, Uttrakhand and I graduated from SGT University in 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism & Mass Communication (BJMC). I am an avid reader and have a deep interest in traveling, meeting new people, and sharing their stories.

2. Why did you choose the Journalism & Mass Communication program at SGT University?

I chose SGT University’s BJMC course for its excellent facilities. They had the largest shooting area in the NCR region and an in-house news channel called SGT Times, run by students, providing valuable exposure. Their PCR Room was fully equipped with features like a teleprompter and voice control. I gained hands-on experience through projects like radio shows, ads, and documentaries. It was an exciting opportunity.

3. What areas did you focus on for your journalism career?

I focused on writing for newspapers, both online and offline, and content writing for businesses. I learned how to cover stories effectively and grab readers’ attention. I used the inverted pyramid concept and the 5Ws and 1H framework to deliver concise and engaging news stories.

4. What are the current trends in journalism that students should know?

Journalism is shifting towards digital media. More people are reading and watching the news on their mobile devices. As journalists, we need to write short and attention-grabbing scripts. AI will also play a big role in the future, so it’s important for media professionals to provide unique insights that AI cannot replicate.

5. What resources have you used during your studies at SGT University?

During my studies at SGT University, I had access to essential resources. The university library was a comfortable place to study with a wide range of journalism books. It greatly supported my assignments and research. Additionally, SGT University provided a vast online library, offering an incredible collection of books covering diverse topics and genres.

6. How did you prepare for journalism job interviews? Did SGT University help?

SGT University helped me a lot with job interviews. We had panel discussions and simulated news debates to gain real-world experience. We also had rigorous interview training sessions to prepare us for placements.

7. Describe the teaching methods and learning experience in the Journalism program.

The classes were interactive, and we often gave presentations to build confidence. The teaching emphasized practical learning and field exposure.

8. Did SGT University help you with internships?

Yes, SGT University’s CRC Department helped me secure internships in various fields of mass communication, including roles in social media and content creation. I chose to work with startups and take on freelance projects.

9. How did the faculty support your growth in journalism? Share your experiences.

The faculty was very supportive, ensuring each student received personal attention. One faculty member who significantly contributed to my growth was S. K. Pandey, a senior journalist and associate dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication. Through his teachings, we gained a deep understanding of the latest trends, techniques, and standards prevalent in the industry. His mentorship helped me bridge the gap between academic learning and the demands of the media industry.

10. Lastly, any advice for current students pursuing this course?

Confidence is essential in this industry. Work on improving your English and presentation skills. Also, have a good grasp of technical aspects like camera work and editing, as it helps me understand the field better. In addition, it is important to have a basic understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT, to increase productivity. Treat AI not as a threat but as a helpful friend.
