Leather's Heritage & Modern Applications: Insights from School of Design Workshop

On April 30, 2024, the School of Design hosted a workshop titled Leather's Rich Heritage and Modern Applications, featuring Ms. Komal Pahwa as the guest speaker.


 

During this engaging session, Pahwa led students through a comprehensive exploration of leather, tracing its historical significance and modern innovations. She began by examining leather’s deep roots in ancient civilisations, detailing its role in clothing, accessories, and tools. Pahwa highlighted the material's cultural and practical importance, showing how traditional craftsmanship has shaped its use over time.


 

Next, Pahwa turned to the material’s contemporary applications, illustrating how technological advancements have reshaped leather production. She discussed the rise of eco-friendly practices, such as alternative tanning methods and vegetable-based dyes, demonstrating how today’s designers blend traditional techniques with modern innovations to meet sustainability goals.


 

The workshop also featured an interactive segment, where students directly engaged with Pahwa. They gained practical insights into designing and sourcing leather products and had the opportunity to ask questions and receive valuable guidance on navigating the leather industry.


 

Ultimately, the workshop successfully bridged the gap between leather’s rich history and its future in design. It underscored the material’s enduring appeal and its evolving role in the sustainable design landscape. The event provided students with a deeper understanding and appreciation of leather’s impact on contemporary fashion and design.
