When I first began looking for a university, I was not simply searching for a campus or a degree. I was searching for a place that could nurture my curiosity and help me explore myself and the world around me. I wanted an academic environment that would challenge me to think deeply, encourage me to ask difficult questions, and allow me to explore ideas that did not fit neatly into one discipline, and strengthen my abilities in pattern recognition and associative thinking. Most importantly, I wanted to study something that truly reflected the way I see the world, not as separate subjects, but as interconnected systems in a not-so-usual way. That search led me to SGT University and to the fascinating field of Cognitive Science.

At the time, I knew that Cognitive Science was exactly what I wanted to pursue. What attracted me most was its interdisciplinary nature. It is one of the few fields that brings together psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, philosophy, and artificial intelligence to answer one of humanity’s most profound questions: how does the mind work? Like what part of the brain is responsible for it, and how one can maximise its utility.

For those who are deeply curious to know about human behavior, mental processes, and the mechanisms behind our feelings, emotions, and perceptions, this field felt like a perfect match. It offered the opportunity to study not just what we think, but how we think and how those processes can be analyzed and understood.

SGT University stood out for offering this unique program in an environment that felt both accessible and promising. Located near Delhi, the university gave me the chance to stay close to home while pursuing a specialized course that is still relatively rare in India. I did not have to move to another state to follow my academic interests. Instead, I found a university that brought together opportunity, innovation, and comfort in one place. At the time, it seemed like a practical decision. Today, after nearly completing my second year, I understand that it was one of the most important decisions of my life.

The Beginning: Excitement, Uncertainty, and Possibility

Starting university is an experience filled with all sorts of emotions. There is excitement about the future, uncertainty about what lies ahead, and curiosity about the people and ideas that will shape the years to come.

My first days at SGT University were similar, whilst I tried to have no prior judgments. I tried to keep my mind straight and just experience without any prior bias overruling my actions.

Everything felt new: the campus, the classrooms, the faculty, and the community. I was entering a field that challenged conventional ways of thinking. Cognitive Science does not allow you to remain within the comfort of one discipline. Instead, it encourages you to connect ideas from multiple domains and view problems from different perspectives. Which, in all, is transformative for me.

Subjects such as the development of psychological thought and neurocognition quickly became some of my favourites. These courses introduced me to the foundations of how humans perceive the world, process information, develop across the lifespan, and construct meaning.

What made the experience even more exciting was how computational methods could be used to model cognitive processes and test theories about the mind. This intersection of psychology and technology confirmed that I had chosen the right path. Each lecture felt like opening another door into understanding what it means to be human.

Beyond the Classroom: Interdisciplinary Learning in Action

One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey at SGT University has been the opportunity to apply what I have learned beyond the classroom.

I have worked on research papers and participated in Synergy projects that brought together students and faculty from different departments. Some of these collaborations involved the behavioral sciences, while others included engineering groups.

These experiences showed me that the most meaningful discoveries often occur at the middle of disciplines, which SGT could provide. Working with students from different academic backgrounds taught me how to communicate ideas clearly, think collaboratively, and approach problems from new angles. It reinforced one of the core lessons of Cognitive Science itself: complex questions require diverse perspectives. Research also deepened my understanding of the scientific process. It taught me patience, attention to detail, and the importance of asking the right questions. More than anything, it gave me the confidence to see myself as someone capable of contributing to knowledge rather than simply consuming it.

Life Beyond Academics

While academics have played a central role in my experience, life at SGT University has also been enriched by opportunities outside the classroom. I participated in ramp walks, which helped me express not just myself but the whole team creatively, which we did end up winning. Another meaningful experience was receiving peer listener training through C.A.L.M Spaces. This training taught me how to listen with empathy and provide emotional support to others. It helped me develop communication skills and a deeper appreciation for mental health and emotional well-being. These activities reminded me that education is not limited to textbooks and examinations. Some of the most important lessons come from learning how to connect with people, support others, and understand ourselves more fully.

The Growth Coaster

If I had to describe the greatest challenge I have faced, it would be learning how to let go of fixed ideas about who I am while continuing to evolve. Our University is home to an extraordinary range of people, perspectives, and cultures. In this environment, one’s assumptions are constantly tested. As we engage with perspectives distinct from our own, we come to recognize that identity is dynamic rather than fixed. Obviously, this process can be disorienting.

There was a time when I was highly expressive and outwardly energetic. Later, I became more withdrawn and internally focused. Today, I find myself in a more balanced and neutral state where I am still learning, observing, and adapting.

Exposure to people from diverse cultural and personal backgrounds has played a major role in this transformation. Interacting with others who see the world differently has taught me to be selectively open-minded, patient, and expressive, as there is one thing I believe “Energy is only in its state of activation when the vessel is spacious enough”

I have learned to manage my emotions with greater clarity and to approach challenges with a calmer perspective. Studying Cognitive Science has also influenced this growth in many ways; my education has become a mirror.

Exploration in the Aquarium

What makes life at SGT University special is the culture of exploration it fosters. The faculty members create a supportive and explorative, expansive space where students can ask questions, challenge assumptions, and pursue independent interests. The campus environment is diverse and dynamic, bringing together students from different regions, cultures, and disciplines.

Whether through classroom discussions, collaborative research, extracurricular activities, or informal conversations with peers, I have found countless opportunities to grow.

The Centre of Excellence for Andragogical and Pedagogical Sciences (CEAPS) at SGT University- plays a significant role in enhancing the academic environment at SGT University. It organizes faculty development programs, innovative teaching workshops, and learner-centred initiatives. CEAPS equips educators with modern teaching strategies and technology-driven methods. It also supports student well-being through initiatives such as C.A.L.M Spaces, which promote emotional resilience and stress management among the students. Through these efforts, CEAPS contributes to a more engaging, supportive, and effective learning experience for both students and faculty.

To me, it’s more than a University

In the end, the purpose was to come to SGT University to study the mind, hoping to trace the electrical sparks between neurons and understand the hidden patterns that shape our thoughts. What I did not expect was that, somewhere between lectures, research papers, and late-night conversations, a spark would ignite within me as well. Albert Camus conveyed, “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.” These years have been that summer which feels like a quiet awakening. I learned that the mind is not a rigid machine, but a sky full of constellations, where memories, emotions, and ideas shine brighter when connected. SGT University became my telescope and my mirror: a place where I looked outward into the mysteries of human consciousness and inward into the person I am still becoming. I came here to understand the mind, but I might leave carrying something even more luminous, a deeper understanding of the world around and within. So in the end, it all comes back to what is supposed to be!
