SGT University Revolutionizes Agriculture in South Haryana

On January 25, 2025, SGT University’s Faculty of Agricultural Sciences launched a groundbreaking initiative by introducing low-chilling varieties of apple, pear, peach, and plum in South Haryana—an area historically considered unsuitable for these crops. This visionary step, inaugurated at the Agriculture Research & Demonstration Farm in Kaliawas, seeks to redefine the region’s agricultural potential through innovative research and advanced technology. This move represents a significant shift toward agricultural diversification in Gurugram, where traditional crops like wheat, mustard, and millet dominate. Introducing low-chilling varieties is particularly pivotal, as it aligns with the region’s climatic conditions, enabling the successful cultivation of these fruits. Farmers must receive comprehensive training and technical support to ensure the project's success, soil quality must be assessed considering climate variability, and crop selection should be driven by market demand. Additionally, addressing potential challenges through robust research and practical solutions is essential. If implemented effectively, this initiative can increase farmers’ incomes and bring much-needed diversity to the agricultural landscape, contributing significantly to Gurugram’s economic growth and sustainability. Esteemed experts like Dr. S.S. Sindhu and Dr. R.K. Roy emphasized the initiative's transformative potential to empower farmers and boost incomes by cultivating high-value fruit crops.
