A symposium entitled ‘The Role of Nutrition in Enhancing Athletic Performance and Recovery’ was organized by the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics in association with IIC, SGT University on 05 Dec 2024. Eminent speakers Ms. Shilpa and Dr. Mahak Sharma came from Sports Authority of India and Manav Rachna international Institute of Research and Studies, respectively. The session was attended by students, faculty members and sports enthusiasts, with a keen interest in the connection between diet and athletic performance.
The primary objective of the symposium was to address students about nutrition for athletes, including the dietary strategies that can support training, improve performance, and promote recovery. The lecture began with an overview of basic nutrition, emphasizing the importance of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) in an athlete's diet. The speaker emphasize on carbohydrates, which is a primary source of energy for athletes. They also explained the significance of carbohydrate loading, about pre and post workout meals. The speaker provided guidance on the types of fats athletes should consume, recommending healthy fats like those found in avocados, nuts, and fish. Adequate hydration is a must during exercise. The session was very much interactive, students rectified their queries related to the topic.
