Mr. Abhra Mukhopadhyay is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education, SGT University,
Gurugram, with a career spanning over two and a half decades in special education, rehabilitation
psychology, and inclusive education. His professional journey reflects a rare synthesis of clinical practice,
teacher education, scholarly research, and institutional leadership, shaped through long-standing
engagement with some of India’s most respected institutions in the disability sector.
His academic formation includes a Master of Education in Special Education (Intellectual Disabilities)
from The ICFAI University, Tripura, a Master of Arts in Psychology from Nagpur University, a Diploma in
Special Education (MR/ID) from the National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped, Secunderabad, and
a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychological Counselling, complemented by a Bachelor of Education in
Special Education from Netaji Subhas Open University, for which he was awarded the Gold Medal for
First Class First. He is dually registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India as a Special Educator and
Rehabilitation Psychologist.
Over the years, he has held positions of significant responsibility across various institutions across the
country serving as special educator, rehabilitation psychologist, faculty trainer, course coordinator,
principal, and placement coordinator. This breadth of experience continues to inform his teaching at
SGT University, where he mentors students across the D.Ed., B.Ed., and M.Ed. programmes in Special
Education.
As a scholar, his contributions include peer-reviewed publications in international journals, a chapter in
an edited volume on media technology and disability, and a study manual on Vocational Training and
Employment published under the aegis of the Rehabilitation Council of India. He has presented his work
at international platforms, including the SIVUS Conference at Rajshahi University, Bangladesh, and has
lent his expertise as a Resource Person in numerous RCI-accredited Continuing Rehabilitation Education
programmes and as an External Examiner for RCI.
His scholarly interests centre on intellectual and developmental disabilities, sexuality education for
persons with disabilities, inclusive education, vocational rehabilitation, life skills development, and
community-based rehabilitation. Beyond academia, he has been instrumental in facilitating the socio-
economic rehabilitation and competitive employment of young adults with disabilities at organisations
such as ITC Sonar Bangla and KFC Restaurants, Kolkata — a reflection of his enduring commitment to
translating research and pedagogy into meaningful livelihoods.
