Lines to Life: A beginner's Sketching Journey
30th January, 2026
On 30th January, 2026, the School of Design at SGT University hosted a hands-on workshop called “Lines to Life: A Beginner’s Sketching Journey.” The workshop was led by artist Subrata De and was designed for beginners interested in learning how to sketch by breaking down the basics of drawing into four key areas: linework, observation, proportion, and creative expression.
Beginners will be able to start developing their sketching skills after completing this workshop, which focuses on the importance of observing and understanding the different forms they see around them before putting those forms into drawings. Students will have the opportunity to use guided drawings to develop their understanding of different line techniques, shading techniques and creating depth and dimension using these techniques. The workshop’s interactivity also allowed participants to try out different ways of using freehand drawing and to build their confidence as freehand drawers by experimenting with as much as they wanted.
Mr Subrata’s demonstrations were step-by-step, and each student received individualised feedback on their work, giving them a good understanding of the theory behind what they were being taught, making their learning experience both enjoyable and accessible. An additional highlight of the workshop was a discussion about the importance of sketching as a visual communication tool and how it can be used to develop concepts during the design process.
Overall, the workshop was a rewarding experience for participants in developing their technical skills, enhancing their creativity, and building their confidence as designers through sketching and making it a major part of their design careers.
