Faculty of Design Students Explore Traditional Crafts at National Craft Museum

On September 13, 2024, students from the Faculty of Design visited the National Craft Museum & Hastkala Academy in New Delhi. The visit aimed to immerse students in India’s rich heritage of traditional crafts and art forms, deepening their understanding of craftsmanship in design.
The museum features an extensive collection of handicrafts, textiles, and artefacts from various regions of India, highlighting the diversity and intricacy of Indian artisanship. Students explored different sections, including textiles, woodwork, terracotta, and tribal art, gaining valuable insights into the techniques and materials used in traditional crafts.
At the Hastkala Academy, exhibits further emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting India’s craft traditions within contemporary design practices. Interactive sessions allowed students to engage with master artisans, observe live demonstrations, and learn about the cultural significance behind each craft.
This educational visit proved to be an enriching experience, inspiring students to incorporate traditional craftsmanship into their modern design thinking and practice.
