Distinguished Professor and Dean - Faculty of Applied and Basic Sciences

Dean - Faculty of Applied and Basic Sciences

Dr. Surendra Kumar Trigun, former Senior Professor & Head, Department of Zoology, Institute of Science, BHU. Started academic Journey as a regular faculty in 1988 from Lucknow University then to the Department of Zoology, BHU in 1991, where served till superannuated as a Senior Professor. Over 35 years of astounding teaching and research shaped and inspired countless young scholars with a passion for life Sciences: Biochemistry.

Research:

An Internationally renowned researcher whose group contributed in the areas of :

  • Neurobiology of excitotoxic brain disorders: 1st Indian lab to develop a rat model of neuro excitotoxicity, established Glu-NMDAR-nNOS axis as central patho-mechanism, undertaken pre-clinical studies targeted to Panax1, SIRT1 & SIRT3 against hepatic encephalopathy a neuroexcitoxic model.
  • Molecular mechanism of anticancer action of natural products: Developed AFB1 induced rat model of HCC (Hepatocellular Carcinoma) and undertaken pre-clinical studies targeted to hyperglycolysis-inflammation axis for 2 natural compounds; Fisetin and Emodin + 3 Ru-Complexes.

Established a primary neuronal cell culture facility and an adult neurogenesis protocol to explore neuronal stem cell based strategy against neurodegeneration.

Mentored 17 Ph.D., 1 D.Sc., 3 MD and 4 PDFs and published a series of highly-cited peer-reviewed international papers, book chapters coupled with many research collaborations and >12 extramural major research projects.

Awards & Recognitions:

Elected Fellows of the National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc) and Indian Academy of Neuroscience (FIAN) & also received the prestigious AMBO and DST-BOYSCAST fellowships. Served as the syndicate member of the Cluster University of Jammu, Board of studies and advisory board member of various central Universities and Institutes. Chaired session and delivered plenary/invited lectures in many International conferences and workshops & mentoring lectures in DST Inspire and HRDC programs.

Academic Administration:

Creditable record in serving BHU as the Head & Coordinator, CAS, Department of Zoology, Director, HRDC, the Coordinator, Central Discovery Centre (CDC), Dy Coordinator, DBT-BHU-ISLS, Vice-President, University Sports Board, Chairman, Anti Ragging Squad BHU and Vice-Chairman, UACB (University Admission Coordination Board).
