2025-11-06

The Department of Liberal Studies and Social Sciences, School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Liberal Arts (SHSL), SGT University, in collaboration with the School of Emerging Media, Communication and Film Studies (SMCF), hosted an insightful Diplomacy Dialogue titled “Storms Around, Anchors Within: India’s Diplomacy in a Turbulent Neighbourhood” on Monday, October 6, 2025. The session brought together distinguished scholars and students to explore India’s evolving diplomatic strategies and the growing role of soft power in shaping regional relations.

Setting the tone for the event, Dr. Debasis Bhattacharya, Dean, SHSL, emphasized the importance of understanding diplomacy not merely as statecraft but as a bridge that connects nations through culture, dialogue, and cooperation.

Prof. Chintamani Mahapatra, former Rector (Pro-Vice Chancellor) and Professor of American Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and Founder & Honorary Chairman of the Kalinga Institute of Indo-Pacific Studies, offered a deep analysis of India’s diplomatic positioning amid regional uncertainty. He highlighted how India’s foreign policy has evolved to balance assertiveness with restraint, reflecting its growing confidence on the global stage. “India’s diplomacy today is defined by pragmatism and principle. Despite the turbulence in its neighbourhood, the country continues to anchor its relations in dialogue, mutual respect, and a commitment to peace,” he said.

Building on this perspective, Prof. R. S. Yadav, former Vice Chancellor of Baba Mastnath University, Rohtak, and former Professor and Chairman, Department of Political Science, Kurukshetra University, shed light on the significance of soft power as an instrument of diplomacy. He explained how India’s cultural influence, democratic values, and humanitarian initiatives contribute to its image as a trustworthy regional partner. “Soft power is India’s greatest strength. From yoga and cinema to development cooperation and education, India has the capacity to connect with its neighbours through shared traditions and aspirations. It is this cultural diplomacy that can turn challenges into opportunities,” he remarked.

The interactive session concluded with a round of questions from students, who raised thought-provoking points about India’s relations with its immediate neighbours, the impact of global power shifts, and the country’s diplomatic response to emerging regional conflicts.

The event was conceptualized, convened, and compared by Dr. Nandini Basistha, Associate Professor, Department of Liberal Studies & Social Sciences, SHSL. It underscored SGT University’s commitment to promoting dialogue on global affairs and nurturing informed perspectives among young scholars. Through such platforms, the university aims to encourage academic engagement with real-world policy issues and strengthen students’ understanding of India’s role in the international order.
